Chapter 14
Bianca lay in a cold exam room wearing a paper gown, staring holes into a poster of a cute, chubby-cheeked kid blowing the fuzz off a dandelion puff. And this was somehow supposed to be calming? Talk about a major fail.
It would take a fifth of scotch she could no longer drink to calm her after all the indignity she’d suffered in the last eight hours. First, Trapper had told her he loved her and then proceeded to list her faults as proof of the miracle. Then there was the conversation with James that was nothing more than a reality slap across the face. And that was immediately followed by having to deal with Karma and Fisher without the aid of drugs or caffeine. She had a real problem living without caffeine.
The ob-gyn visit merely upped her indignity factor into the triple digits. She was forced to weigh herself in public—okay, not public. The big ugly scale was in the hallway, but the nurse practically shouted her weight and then gave her a hard time about it being too low. As if she hadn’t spent the last two days eating everything that wasn’t nailed down. Obviously the nurse’s definition of low weight gain and Bianca’s were diametrically opposed. After all, she’d gained weight. What she wanted to know was how a person who barely kept half her caloric intake down could gain ten pounds in under a week?
If lover boy hadn’t been standing beside the scale to catch her, Bianca might have ended up on her ass from the shock, and the nurse would have definitely had strangle marks around her chubby little neck.
The only time that Trapper let her out of his sight since their nightmare breakfast was at the doctor’s office when she was ordered to pee in a cup—and that was only because she’d slammed the door in his face and locked it.
Trapper leaned against the wall, watching her. She didn’t need to look; she could feel his gaze. “You’re still not talking to me?”
“I have nothing to say.”
His face blocked her view of the stupid poster hanging on the ceiling.
“Look, I was just working on going to my happy place. You’re not helping me get there.”
“I’m sorry.” And he really did look sorry. Damn, why did he have to pull that puppy-dog expression out of his bag of tricks? He slid his hand over hers, and the anxiousness that had her heart racing decreased markedly. When it came to anxiousness she had more than her share. After all, it was never comfortable to assume the position—feet in stirrups—with an audience no less. “Bianca, I didn’t mean to upset you. And I might have gone about expressing my feelings the wrong way.”
“You think? Honestly, Trapper, I’ve never heard another declaration of love that was worse. Not even in the movies.”
“At least it was memorable. If it had been out of Declarations for Dummies, it never would have made an impression.”
“Oh, yours made an impression—a bad one. You obviously haven’t perfected the art of sweet talk, that’s for sure.
